Wikileaks Mirrors

September 18, 2008 by jp

This is a follow up post to my previous link bait and bot bait post based on the recent Sarah Palin wikileaks post (related to the wikileaks mirrors), in this example I will show you an un-saturated form of Bot baiting, by un-saturated I mean that it’s not widely used or known about. It is simple and requires a little knowledge and practice.

Let’s look at a few bots and where these bots travel (bot can also be a scraper) :

Youtube Bots, RSS, API, Auto Galleries and Video Blogs.
Digg Bots, RSS is the primary method.
Yahoo Answers is also primarily RSS feeds.
Google assorted RSS feeds, Blogs, News and Google Trends.

And this is what I am discussing, Google Trends, I personally use Google Trends bots, I have bots that crawl the direct Google Trends RSS feed - this features the top 100 searches for the hour, the only issue here is that all 100 searches are included in the one feed - ideally you want these separated. It’s very common for splogs to grab this feed (a splog is just a spam blog).

The idea here is that by grabbing the RSS feed, Google will crawl your site via a ping for the associated post, once Google finds the post it will add the post to the related Blogs within the Google Trends / search terms page. Confusing - but it really is simple and effective. Here you will have a Post and link from Google (trends) directly to your site - this means Google will crawl your site very quickly and even add your Blog post to the first page within Google, under the related Blogs section.

Now that you are within the related Blogs on Google Trends, smart web masters will now crawl the Google Blogs and Related Google Trends Blog Posts for automatic content for their web sites - again using RSS feeds. Crawling Google Trends and adding the Blogs feeds means that webmasters get the most popular topics within their web sites.

So by getting your Blog within the top 10 results for the Google Trends Related Blogs - you can automatically have 20 - 100 sites linking straight to your Blog.

You have two examples of this right in front of you, one is the gov.palin@yahoo.com post and this one. By simply placing the wikileaks mirrors as the title and within the first line of this post, Google will now add this post to the related Blogs for that hot search term (within Google trends) and I have just baited several bots - straight to this post.
